1506 Avalon assemblages

Early Ediacaran Life, approx. 600 million years ago. These are frondose-shaped life-forms, collectively named rangeomorphs. They are one of the earliest known multicellular life forms and lived in the gloom, very deep in the ocean. This image shows them illuminated due to the surrounding glow of subterranean volcanic activity on the right and at the back of this scene. It is not yet known what kind of living organisms they were.
